With the launch of a new return service, bpost ensures that licence plates to be cancelled can continue to be handed in at a post office after 1 August. Plates can be dropped off unpackaged and will be delivered to the DIV’s cancellation service the next working day.

As of 1 August 2025, the cancellation of licence plates in Belgium will be handled entirely by the Belgian vehicle registration service (DIV) and no longer by bpost, following a recent decision by the government. To ensure continuity for citizens, bpost will continue to offer a service for returning licence plates to be cancelled to the DIV’s cancellation service after that date. As such, it is important to remember that official licence plates should never be destroyed by their owners but must be returned to the DIV.
The licence plate to be cancelled can be handed in unpackaged at any post office. The bpost staff will verify whether the plate is an official Belgian licence plate and will then provide a submission receipt stating the licence plate number. Thanks to the Track & Trace feature, each customer receives a notification once the licence plate has been successfully delivered to the DIV’s cancellation service.

2. bpost staff will verify the licence plate's authenticity and provide a submission receipt showing the licence plate number along with a Track & Trace code.
