Zero-emission letter and parcel deliveries in Liege

A new era of sustainable mail delivery for bpost: more than 90% of regular rounds in Liege are now environmentally friendly.

A fleet of 128 electric vans and a network of 69 pick-up points across Liege ensure that the city’s inhabitants (postcode zones 4000, 4020, 4030) now enjoy eco-friendly zero-emission deliveries. Liège (city centre and Outremeuse) is the latest fully fledged Ecozone after Seraing, Verviers and Eupen.

90% of rounds in Liège postcode zone 4000 are already zero-emission rounds. That means that 74 postwomen and men do their round on foot or use an eco-friendly e-van. As well as greener rounds, a new larger vehicle means that parcels are delivered across the city centre in a sustainable way. All rounds in postcode zone 4020 are green. In postcode zone 4030, meanwhile, virtually all regular services are provided carbon emission-free. In time, this will be increased to all regular rounds as new e-vans are added to the fleet.

Parcel lockers

The key characteristics of Ecozones are: zero-emission deliveries and a dense network of pick-up points (post offices, post points, parcel points and parcel lockers). The existing network will be bolstered by new parcel lockers at nine key locations. All told, inhabitants of Liege city centre and Outremeuse will be able to pick up their parcels 24/7, on foot or by bike, from parcel lockers at 23 high-footfall locations, the nearest of which is never more than 400 metres of their home.

The network is now made up of 69 pick-up points strategically located across the city to ensure optimal accessibility to post offices, post points, parcel points and parcel lockers. As well as reducing the company’s carbon footprint, this expansion also gives inhabitants more flexibility, making it easier for them to receive and send parcels.

Sébastien Leroy, head of the Urban Logistics project at bpost: “Our target at bpost is for 50% of all deliveries to be sustainable by 2025. Urban logistics is one of our main concerns and the City of Liege is strategically important for us. By introducing electric vehicles and reinforcing the network of pick-up points we are able to offer inhabitants a convenient, eco-friendly delivery solution.”
Mayor of the City of Liege, Willy Demeyer: “The presence of proximity services at the heart of our neighbourhoods helps safeguard social cohesion among inhabitants. The ecological factor is clearly a plus, which we are delighted with.”
